THE IRS IS HIRING! MESSAGE FROM IRS HUMAN CAPITAL TRANSFORMATION:

The IRS is hiring! We’ve posted thousands of Internal Revenue Agent (GS 5-12) positions that are open for up to 12 months. These positions will specialize in managing audits or exams for both individual and business taxpayers nationwide in more than 253 office locations. This hiring effort is enabled by the landmark Inflation Reduction Act funding approved in August 2022 to improve the nation’s tax administration.

Basic requirements for all grades include

  • A Certificate as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or a bachelor's or higher degree in accounting that included at least 30 semester hours in accounting or 24 semester hours in accounting and an additional 6 semester hours in related subjects such as business law, economics, statistical/quantitative methods, computerized accounting or financial systems, financial management, or finance.

OR

  • A bachelor's or higher degree in a field other than accounting or a combination of education and experience equivalent to 4 years that included at least 30 semester hours in accounting or 24 semester hours in accounting and 6 semester hours in related subjects as described above.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements, to qualify for these positions, you must also meet the qualification requirements for the specific grade level you’re applying for. We’re looking for applicants with skills in verbal and written communication; independent research and decision-making; attention to detail and time; and relevant tax and management experience.
