REMINDER: TAX PAYMENTS ARE DUE APRIL 15 EVEN WITH AN EXTENSION, AS WELL AS 2024 FIRST QUARTER ESTIMATES

Taxpayers who are not able to file by the April 15, 2024 deadline can request an extension before that deadline, but they should know that an extension to file is not an extension to pay taxes. If they owe taxes, they should pay them before the due date to avoid potential penalties and interest on the amount owed.

The IRS reminds taxpayers that:

  • An extension of time to file your return does not grant you any extension of time to pay your taxes.
  • You should estimate and pay any owed taxes by your regular deadline to help avoid possible penalties.
  • You must file your extension request no later than the regular due date of your return.
  • Taxpayers in certain disaster areas do not need to submit an extension electronically or on paper. Check to see if you qualify and the due date of your return.

Taxpayers who request a six-month extension to file their taxes have until October 15, 2024, to file their 2023 federal income tax return.

Taxpayers, including self-employed individuals, retirees, investors, businesses and corporations are also reminded about the April 15 deadline for first quarter estimated tax payments for tax year 2024.

The IRS recommends taxpayers use the Tax Withholding Estimator tool to accurately determine the appropriate amount of tax withheld from paychecks.
