IDENTITY THEFT CASES: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RESOLVE?

The IRS is reporting on the website that victims of identity theft who sent them a Form 14039 or Form 14039-B, Identity Theft Affidavit, that is usually takes within 120 days for cases to be resolved, but due to extenuating circumstances caused by the pandemic, the identity theft inventories have increased and on average it is taking about 430 days to resolve identity theft cases.

The IRS said there is no actions taxpayers can take to speed the process other than answering questions in a timely manner, and it added that taxpayers should not file duplicate forms or call the agency on the status of cases.
