As an enrolled agent (EA) you can represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service, command higher fees and be recognized as a respected tax professional. Energize your existing tax practice or hit the ground running as you start a new career by becoming an EA.

By attending NSTP’s EA Boot Camp, you will master tax basics and be equipped to pass the Special Enrollment Exam (SEE). Our highly experienced instructors will present information to help you to master tax basics and successfully prepare for the SEE.

Tax return preparers may earn up to five hours of Federal Tax continuing education credit for each of Parts 1 and 2, and two credit hours of Ethics for Part 3. The maximum amount of SEE prep program is 12 credit hours total. SEE Test Preparation CE is not available to EAs, or ERPA’s.

SEE Test Prep Part 1 will include topics:

Preliminary work to prepare tax returns, Income and Assets, Deductions and Credits, Taxation and Advice, Specialized Returns for Individuals

Part 1 - Learning Objectives

  • Identify the overall format for computing tax liability, including the key components of gross income, deductions for and from adjusted gross income, tax liability, and prepayments and credits
  • Determine qualifying exemption deductions, standard deductions, filing status, and requirements to file.
  • Recognize special gross income and related exclusion rules for a variety of sources of income, including salaries and wages, fringe benefits, dividends, interest, rents, annuities and social security
  • Apply the special deduction rules for passive losses, alimony, and other expenses allowed as deductions for adjusted gross income
  • Identify the major categories of itemized deductions and related limitations
  • Identify capital assets and apply the basic netting rules for capital gains and losses
  • Calculate recognized gain or loss and basis on various sales or exchanges of personal and investment properties, including installment sales
  • Review and apply the basic rules for refundable and nonrefundable personal credits
  • Recognize special issues and computations related to estimated taxes, the alternative minimum tax, and the allocable parental tax
  • Understand the qualifications for contributions to Individual Retirement Accounts and possible limits and/or restrictions on related deductions
  • Identify the key components of the federal estate tax and gift tax in determining federal transfer tax liabilities
  • Recognize key issues in gathering taxpayer data, preparing returns, and advising taxpayers as to various tax minimization strategies

SEE Test Prep Part 2 will include topics:

Business Entities, Business Financial Information, Specialized Returns, and Taxpayers

Part 2 - Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish accounting periods and methods for businesses, and apply special tax rules related to farm income, prepaid income, inventories, and bad debts
  • Identify asset classifications, recovery methods, and recovery periods under the MACRS system, and apply special rules related to bonus depreciation and Sec. 179 deductions
  • Recognize the key requirements and components of amortization and depletion deductions
  • Identify special deduction limits applicable to such business expenses as travel and entertainment, net operating losses, casualty losses, and business retirement plans
  • Recognize potential business credits, self-employment tax issues, and excise taxes
  • Calculate gain or loss on the sale or exchange of business properties, with special emphasis on Sec. 1231 transactions and depreciation recaptures
  • Identify tax and basis issues in forming a partnership and selecting the partnership tax year and accounting method
  • Calculate partnership ordinary income, specially allocated items, guaranteed payments, and allocate these items to partners
  • Describe the tax consequences of non-liquidating and liquidating distributions of partnership cash and property, as well as sales of a partnership interest
  • Identify the basic requirements of Sec. 351 controlled transfers to corporations, and calculate recognized gain and basis for such contributions
  • Recognize special issues related to the calculation of corporate capital gains and losses, charitable contributions, dividends received deductions, and alternative minimum tax
  • Understand Schedules M-1 and M-3, and reconcile book and taxable income for a corporation
  • Determine a corporation’s earnings and profits, and calculate the tax effects to the corporation and shareholders of liquidating and non-liquidating distributions
  • Describe the requirements for electing S Corporation status, and identify special taxes and possible issues related to terminating the S election
  • Calculate S corporation income and loss allocations to shareholders, distribution issues, and basis rules
  • Identify key issues related to filing a decedent’s final income tax return
  • Describe estate and trust income tax entities, and determine the taxable income of such entities and allocation of such income between the entity and the beneficiaries

SEE Test Prep Part 3 will include topics:

Practices and Procedures, Representation before the IRS, Specific Types of Representation, Completion of the Filing Process

Part 3 - Learning Objectives

  • Describe the rules in Circular 230 that govern the practice of preparing taxes professionally
  • Explain duties and restrictions of practicing before the IRS
  • Identify the standards for preparing tax returns

Late Registration
  • Registrations must be received no later then 7 days prior to the seminar date.
  • Registrations received after this date will be subject to a $35 late fee.
  • NSTP provides refunds to registrants up to 14 days prior to the date of the course. For those registrants canceling within 14 days prior to the date of the course NSTP will allow attendance at another seminar site. If there are extraordinary circumstances NSTP will allow the participant to attend a future education course. An administrative charge of $25 will be assessed if canceled.
