While many tax preparers may understand basic concepts related to tax resolution and even dabble in it from time to time, many fail to understand the complexities and nuances of representation. In this area, what you don’t know can hurt you and your client. This basic course will help remedy weaknesses you may have in your understanding of what tax resolution really is, the background and current landscape, as well as possible lucrative areas of tax representation. This will help provide basic building blocks to keep adding to your knowledge in this arena of tax representation.
We will go through all the IRS representatives that you may encounter, their titles, and roles as you work with them on the front lines while representing your client’s interests. You will understand your authority granted under Circular 230, as well as some key things to watch for under this authority. We cover the Power of Attorney form 2848 and Form 8821, as well as best practices for proper submission and acceptance. We will also go over some tricks and tools to obtain and work with confidential taxpayer information in the course of your representation. We will cover an organizational overview of the IRS so you will know which department you should work with when helping your client and also understand which ones can be your best ally. You will understand the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TBOR) so you will be prepared to represent your clients and protect those rights.
